Personal History

Shiki Wakana was born in Gunma, Japan in 2366. From a young age, Shiki showed compassion and tried to understand those around her. It was this compassion that led her to seek out and make friends with a girl her age named Mei Yoneme, who often was mocked and bullied for looking like a delinquent. As Mei and Shiki grew older, they found that a lost art in the Gunma area was in a renaissance: Touge racing. The two girls would often show up to and watch the battles as they went down, and followed the Takahashi brothers of Mount Akagi closely. After witnessing their signature tandem drift at one event, the duo decided that this was a sport they needed to get in on, and so, they fixed up an old Subaru Impreza and found a deserted mountain pass, forgotten by Federation society to hone their craft. Word soon got out, and other racers began to show up, first to challenge them, then to learn from them. Having such consistent company led to Shiki and Mei becoming a fast duo, far surpassing the other drivers in technique and raw speed. However, while Mei was concerned with growing their legend, even sharing a rumor one of the other drivers had allegedly spotted Ryosuke Takahashi spectating one of their runs, Shiki was thinking longer term. Understanding that this couldn't go on forever, as they had little options to "go pro," Shiki secretly submitted an application to Starfleet Academy behind Mei's back. She tried to hide her application's approval from Mei at first, but she knew that her friend deserved to know eventually. So, one night, Shiki sat down with Mei and told her that she had been accepted into Starfleet Academy, and that she could only delay for another year. Mei, understandably upset, walked out on Shiki. A couple days later, Shiki was out driving the Impreza, thinking of how she was going to apologize to Mei when her musings were interrupted by a red Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution tailing her closely. Assuming the Evo was another cocky challenger, Shiki expected to lose it within a few corners. But the Evo kept up, seeming to know both the course and Shiki's tricks. When she was eventually overtaken by the Evo, she wasn't aware at the time that it was Mei who was behind the wheel. She only found out once she did muster up the courage to apologize, and found the Evo parked in Mei's driveway.
